Packing travel luggage whether it’s a suitcase or a backpack, can conjure fantastic images of leaving for that desert island paradise.

On the flip side there’s that sinking feeling you get at the airport when you’re trying to reason with the attendant to avoid that overweight carriage fee.


 

How to pack a suitcase is still considered by many the number one skill for travellers of all ages, regardless of destination, length of trip or cost.
 
Whether you are a packing newbie or a seasoned pro the following tips will help you to cram in as much as you need and still remain wrinkle-free.
 

 

 



 

How to pack a suitcase in 10 easy steps

 

  1. Step 1. Ensure all buttons and zips are done up prior to packing.
  2.  

  3. Step 2. Pack belts by placing them around the edge of the suitcase or bag.
  4.  

  5. Step 3. Shoes should be put in plastic bags and placed at the bottom of the case. Maximise space by tucking fragile items such as jewellery or gadgets and soft items such as socks and underwear) into them.
  6.  

  7. Step 4. Put heavy items such as toiletries and electricals at the bottom of the case or bag, next to or around the shoes.
  8.  

  9. Step 5. Pack jeans and trousers so they hang over the edges of the case.
  10.  

  11. Step 6. Place jumpers in order of thickness (thickest first, thinest last) onto the trousers.
  12.  

  13. Step 7. Fold in the sleeves of shirts and t-shirts. Reduce the size by rolling these items from the the bottom. This way when you get to your destination if you tuck your shirt into your jeans or trousers the creases won’t be seen.
  14.  

  15. Step 8. Finally wrap the ends of the jeans and trousers over the jumpers, shirts and t-shirts to tuck them in the case nicely.
  16.  

  17. Step 9. Finally if you are taking a towel, put it in last as a protective cover. This is great in case the suitcase splits or soaks up any undesirable liquid, the towel will protect your other clothes.
  18.  

  19. Step 10. If you’re intending to buy souvenirs or items whilst you are away remember to leave some space!

 
So there you have it; 10 easy steps to teach you how to pack a suitcase. These principles can also be applied to not only suitcases, but any rolling luggages, rucksacks and holdalls.

 



 

Top Tip:
Try to avoid folding and stacking shirts, t-shirts and jumpers. The fold and stack method is not only a poor use of space, it also increase wrinkles.

Instead roll your clothes into each other. If you must fold, try putting in tissue paper between items to reduce wrinkles.
